FSJ incorporates three Trusts established at different times by the Fowler Family, Albert & Florence Smith and Edward Cecil Jones. They were all very much ‘Essex people’, and lived in the South-East of the County. The Trust now makes awards throughout the County, but with  particular preference given to the area in which they lived.

The Trust distributes, on average, £400-500,000 annually to between 120-150 organisations principally for projects within the County. As with many funds, the recent economic climate has reduced the value of the fund, but judicious investment has enabled the Trust to maintain its income.

LATEST COVID 19 Update (09/06/20)

We are still receiving a large number of applications for Emergency funding during these troubled times. I am reporting these back to the Trustees at regular ‘remote’ meetings. Very urgent cases are considered immediately.

Following the latest Emergency meeting, we have been able to offer nearly £50,000  between many local charities and groups (nearly £150,000 since the pandemic began). ECF and the Lottery have both allocated significant funds to help with the immediate effects of the Pandemic, and are continuing their support at this critical time.

However, the Trustees recognise the potential problems which may now arise as communities begin to ease out of the current Lockdown restrictions. The focus of this is for vulnerable children, families and the isolated elderly.

If you would like to discuss a potential application, please email and we will call you back.

Non-Covid related applications which were on the Agenda for the May have been deferred to the subsequent meeting (likely to be held in September).

For September applications: Please include an estimate of how the pandemic and Lockdown has effected the charity’s finances / fundraising.

Now that there are 2 of us assessing grant applications, we are able to visit more projects. If you would particularly like one of us to visit, please do get in contact with Alix Mason or Penny  Langran.

NB: ALL visits postponed until further notice (due to Lockdown and self-distancing). We look forward to being able to visit projects again when restrictions allow!
