Philip Tolhurst was appointed as a trustee to the three separate Fowler, Smith, and Jones Trusts in 1980, and initially took on the management of the assets of those Trusts and the investment strategy, in particular securing a major investment in Norwich which generated substantial income for the trusts for many years.
In 1985, as the activities of the three FSJ Trusts expanded, he took on the management of the grant applications, and later merged the three separate Trusts into one.
In 1988 he co-founded the Raleigh Trust which took over the work of Operation Raleigh, and after three years as Managing Trustee was appointed chair in 1991 a position, he held for a further 14 years.
In 1988 he also helped establish and became a founding trustee of the Norman Garon Trust, and in 1992 conceived and then oversaw the establishment of Garon Park Southend-on-Sea. He is the current chair of Trustees.
In 1996 he helped establish and became a trustee of the Brentwood Cathedral and Choral Trust which he currently chairs.
Having qualified as a Solicitor in 1973, he continues to practice in Chelmsford.
A keen sportsman, he has had many successes as a sailor, and also represented the UK on Sailing’s World Governing authority, chairing both the global Offshore and Oceanic and Constitution committees.
